In Portugal, at least as early as the 16ᵗʰ – 19ᵗʰ centuries, a unit of liquid capacity used for wine, varying locally from 840 to 996 liters. [Tonel] Medida usada antiguamente para regular la capacidad de una embarcacion : era algo mayor que la tonelada, pues diez TONELES hacian doce toneladas.
