A unit of loudness: the loudness of a sound which seems to the average listener to be equal in loudness to a 1000 Hz tone that has an intensity 40 decibels above the most intense sound the listener cannot hear at all (the listener's threshold of perception). 1 on the sone scale is equivalent to 40 on the phon scale.
