shackle

In Great Britain, a unit of length used for the anchor chains of ships, 16ᵗʰ century – 1949, = 12.5 fathoms. Half-shackles were also used. In 1949 the British Navy changed the length to 15 fathoms, thus making it the same length as the American shot.
