Schachtrute [German]
A unit of volume used in earthwork and masonry, conceptually 1 Rute long, 1 Rute wide, and 1 Fuß high, but the actual volume depends on the size of the Rute and Fuß used. There were, for example, Rute 10, 12, 14, and 16 Fuß long. Some 19ᵗʰ century examples:
Braunschweig = 256 braunschweiger Kubikfuß ≈ 5.949 cubic meters. Ruthe = 16 Fuß ; from 1838 1 Fuß = 0.28536238 meter.
Bremen = 256 Kubikfuß ≈ 5.9488 cubic meters.
Lippe-Bückenburg = 256 Kubikfuß ≈ 6.25 cubic meters.
Lippe-Detmold = 256 Kubikfuß ≈ 6.2122 cubic meters.
Prussia = 100 or 144 prussian Kubikfuß ≈ 4.451882767 cubic meters. If 100, the
Ruthe are Zehntelruthe , used by surveyors.
Saxe-Gotha = 256 KubikFuß ≈ 5.781092422 cubic meters.
Saxe-Coberg = 196 Kubik-Werkfuß ≈ 5.504884887 cubic meters.
Schaumburg-Lippe = 256 Kubikfuß ≈ 6.250000000 cubic meters.
