In France, two units, both sometimes called an obole:
- a unit of mass in the poids de marc system used in weighing gold and silver, 1/40 of the once poids de marc = 2 fèlins = 14.4 grains, about 765 milligrams¹. This maille was sometimes called a maille d'esterlin.
- a unit of mass, perhaps only in Burgundy, = 1/24th of a sou = 12 grains, about 0.7 grams. This maille was sometimes called a maille de denier.
The maille was also a coin.
