giara [Italian]

In North Africa, Cyprus, Constantinople, a unit of mass used for oil, about @ kilograms. From the Arabic djarra.

Famagusta, = 1/8 cantaro.

Seville, half a cantaro = 5 arroba.

Oil is sold by the cantare. The said cantaro is 8 giare and the giara is 12½ ruotoli, and that of Puglia is 13 giare.

They sell by the bisante [a gold coin] of the Saracens when they sell by the cantaro or by the giarra, and they sell by the staio for white bisantes; that is to say, so many bisanti per giara.

Chiarini, 1481, as quoted in Borlandi, page 68.
