For glass or asbestos yarn, a yarn number system, in which the cut number is equal to the number of 100-yard lengths needed to make up 1 pound avoirdupois.
A unit of length of wet-spun linen yarn, = 300 yards. For the cut system for specifying the fineness of wool yarn, also based on 300 yards, see yarn numbers.
A standard length of woven cloth, approximately 60 yards in the unfinished state.
A measure of the concentration of shellac solution. The cut number is equal to the number of pounds of shellac flakes dissolved in each gallon of solvent. Prepared liquid shellac is usually 3-, 4-, or 5-pound cut.
