At least in Cagliari, a few units of mass existed for specific commodities¹:

Smyth² mentions a rubbo (= 26 libbre di commercio = ¼ cantaro), which of course would make a cantaro of 104 libbre. Doursther calls this unit the “cantarello of Cagliari = 104 libbre”, in contrast to the “cantarello ou quintal = 100 libre = 1200 oncie.”³ The term “cantarello,” the 104-libbre cantaro, and the term “rubbo,” do not occur in the official 1877 tables.

That the term “cantarello” was used in Sardinia for the cantaro is attested by a number of sources.⁴ So far as we know, it was used only in Sardinia.

Smyth says that in Sassari, 4 rubbi = 1 small cantaro and 6 rubbi = 1 large cantaro. Was the weight of the grosso cantaro of Sassari 150 libbre, or 156 libbre? Late sources (e.g., Martini) make the rubbo = 25, not 26 libbre

The libbra weight is an approximation to the ancient Roman libra.

Before 1818, the libbra medicinale in Sardinia was 0.02 gram heavier than that of Turin. After 1818, medicinal weight in Sardinia was identical to that of Turin chart symbol, with a 307.4000 gram libbra.
