In Middle America, at least as early as the 16th century – ?, a measure of capacity, a handful of garlic, onions, chili peppers.
According to Molina (1571) it is: “un manojo o hace de cosas menudas, o una riestra de ajos o de cebollas, o un sartal de chilli, o una suerte de tierra” (a handful or small bundle of little things, or a string of garlic cloves or of onions, or a string of chili peppers, or a plot of land).
