Hounsfield unit

A unit of radiodensity used in evaluating images produced by CT scanners. On its scale, air is −1000, water is 0, and dense bone is 3000. Symbol, HU.

It is named for Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield, the inventor of the CT scanner, who received a Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1979.
