A whimsical gauge of the connectedness of mathematicians, using as a starting point the work of the prolific Paul Erdös. Those who coauthored a paper with Erdös have an Erdös number of 1. Other mathematicians are assigned a number that is one more than the Erdös number of the mathematician with whom they have coauthored a paper who has the lowest Erdös number.
A list of the Erdös numbers of many living mathematicians is kept by Jerry Grossman at https://sites.google.com/oakland.edu/grossman/home/the-erdoes-number-project .
