In the United States, 1015 (1 quadrillion, American style) British thermal units, approximately 1.055 × 1018 joules. This unit is used for such purposes as reporting the total annual energy consumption in the American economy. One quad is roughly the amount of energy in:
“A proposed large unit of length = ten million metres, or approximately the length of an earth quadrant.”
