A British publication of 1843, compiled from official Colonial Office records, uses the Italian names instead of Maltese, but provides the Italian names for smaller units. It also states: “For cloth, linen, cotton, stone, &c. … 3½ palmi make an English yard”1, from which estimate the equivalents shown in pink below have been calculated. That was a standard, convenient convention in commerce; however, a more exact equivalent was 81.9 inches to the canna.2
