Like other systems of apothecaries' weights in Europe, the subdivisions of the German systems were derived from the Roman system.
The Nürnberg apothecary pound was used for pharmaceutical work throughout German-speaking Europe. Its value is said to be ¾ of the old Nürnberg money pound.
The Prussian system was defined in 1816 as part of its reform of weights and measures (Section 25 of Anweisung zur Verfertigung der Probemaase und Gewichte nach §1 der Maass- und Gewicht-Ordung vom 16 Mai 1816), and, like Prussia, spread.
