This type of nail is used as a marker. Its head is embossed with characters, often but not always a date. Shanks, lengths, even the metal from which they are made, vary enormously. They are much sought after by collectors.
The two principal types are pole nails, driven into utility poles, and railroad nails, driven into railroad ties. For photographs and more details see http://nailhunter.com for pole nails and http://facstaff.uindy.edu/~oaks/DateNailInfo.htm for railroad nails.
