In Great Britain, 20th century, a sheet metal gauge (the hoops referred to are those that bind the staves of barrels). Legalized by an Order in Council of 10 July, 1914, and became operational in 1 November 1914. Also known as the Birmingham Gauge. It is an adaptation of the South Staffordshire “B.G.”, issued on 1 March 1884 by the South Staffordshire Ironmasters' Association, with the sanction of the Board of Trade. That in turn was a formalization of standards previously used in South Staffordshire only for sheets and hoops. It is NOT the Birmingham Wire Gage.
A modern version (more decimal places for the thinner gages) of the Birmingham sheet metal gauge is given here.
