Pointed flap on long dimension, diagonal seams.

Metal clasp envelopes

Made of heavy paper: kraft or manila. Notice that the dimensions do not always increase with the size number, for example, #14 is bigger than #15.

Catalog envelopes

Flap on the short dimension, bottom seam, usually a center seam, but sometimes a single side seam.

Remittance envelopes

Hug flap along the long dimension, suitable for printing a large amount of copy. The flap is sometimes perforated. Two side seams.

Ticket envelopes

Rounded flap on longest dimension, diagonal seams.

Policy envelopes

Flap on the short dimension, bottom seam, center seam. The long shape accommodates an insurance policy securely.

Coin envelopes

Flap on short dimension, center seam, bottom seam.

Window envelopes

On window envelopes a rectangle with rounded corners is cut out of the front of the envelope, to allow addresses printed on the letter within to show through. The hole is often covered with a patch of polyethylene, cellophane, or glassine. Only the most common sizes are listed below.

The window on the following sizes is 4¾ inches by 1 ¹/₈ inches and is placed ¾ inch from the left for the 6¼ size and 7/8 inches for all other sizes, and ½ inch from the bottom.

The 8 ⁵⁄₈ inches window envelope comes in two versions.

The window on the following sizes is 4½ inches by 1 ¹/₈ inches, and is located ⁷⁄₈ inch from the left and ½ inch from the bottom.
